Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)

« Back to Glossary Index

Mean time between failures (MTBF) is the predicted elapsed time between inherent failures of an IT system, during normal system operation. MTBF can be calculated as the arithmetic mean (average) time between failures of a system. In the context of IT Operations, a failure can be defined as an incident that causes serious downtime or response time issues. See also Mean Time to Resolve (MTTR).
